Policy Commons passes 50,000 registered users

Coherent Digital today announced that more than 50,000 researchers and students have registered for personal access to its Policy Commons database. These individuals are highly active in academia, government, think tanks, and businesses. Individual memberships form the core of a user base that extends to the 500,000 researchers, experts, faculty, and students who have access thanks to their institutions’ memberships.

Personal registration is open to anyone—whether the affiliated institution is a member or not—and individual registrants benefit from up to 25 searches per month for free. Policy Commons covers more than 3.5 million reports from just over 8,500 NGOs, IGOs, research institutes, and think tanks. Over seventy-five percent of the reports are openly available on the web, but often not published by traditional means and therefore hidden (grey literature). Individuals who register for Policy Commons’ services can also save searches as alerts, follow topics and organizations, build and share custom Lists, and upload content. Registrants and users at member institutions get additional benefits, including unlimited searches and access to 500,000 pages of premium content that’s been licensed from partner publishers.

Coherent’s Managing Director, Toby Green, remarks, “When I ran the publishing program at the OECD, I discovered the benefits of a freemium business model. Quite apart from enabling basic access to those whose institutions may not have the resources to pay for subscriptions, the model also gives basic access to those who work independently, such as consultants. I’d like to thank our many member institutions who make this possible.”
