OpinionArchives · Migration FAQ
Everything your library needs to know about the move. Each magazine keeps its identity on a more powerful platform, with better search, cross-magazine discovery, and (for select titles) the podcasts, blogs, newsletters, and videos the editors publish.
OpinionArchives magazines will move from the existing OpinionArchives platform to Coherent Digital's platform. Each magazine will have its own dedicated landing page and will be accessible through a new Magazines tab at the top of the platform. Customers will gain the functionality and research tools available through Coherent Digital while retaining access to the OpinionArchives magazines they currently license.
Your institution will continue to have access to the OpinionArchives magazines it licenses. The publications, historical coverage, and existing access rights remain intact. What changes is the platform and the additional functionality, discoverability, and new media that Coherent Digital brings to the collections.
Better accessibility. OpinionArchives will meet Level AA conformance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.
Modern, mobile-responsive platform that works across smartphones, tablets, desktops, browsers, and screen sizes.
More powerful searching. Advanced search features, including NEAR operators, wildcard truncation, keyword in context, and filtering, make magazine content easier to discover.
Dedicated magazine landing pages. Each magazine retains its own identity and dedicated space for browsing and searching.
Cross-searching across magazines. Researchers can search across OpinionArchives magazines rather than searching publications individually.
Connections to a wider body of research. OpinionArchives content can be discovered alongside other relevant content on Policy Commons.
Personal research tools. Users can create and share lists and organize research.
Expanded content. For select magazines, blogs, podcasts, newsletters, videos, and other new media published by the magazine, bringing more of each publication's historical and contemporary output together in one place.
Yes. OpinionArchives magazines will not simply disappear into a larger database. Each publication will have its own landing page where researchers can browse and search that magazine. A new Magazines tab will also make it easy to find individual publications from anywhere on Policy Commons.
OpinionArchives on the new platform will combine the magazine archives customers already know with better search and discovery, dedicated magazine landing pages, cross-searching, improved accessibility, and, for select publications, blogs, podcasts, newsletters, Substacks, videos, and other new media. The result will be more than a change of platform: an expanded research resource that can continue to grow with the publications themselves.

This title is still in migration — no content available on October 22:
The platform is changing. Your institution's access to the content it has licensed is not.
Customers will be invited to begin moving voluntarily to Coherent Digital's platform starting October 22, 2026. The existing OpinionArchives platform and the new platform will operate concurrently until January 15, 2027, giving libraries time to test the new platform and make any necessary updates. We will communicate with customers well before the existing platform is retired.
No. Libraries will have a transition period during which both platforms are available. This gives library staff and users time to become familiar with the new platform before the existing OpinionArchives site is retired.
We do not anticipate an interruption in institutional access during the migration. The existing OpinionArchives platform and the Coherent Digital platform will operate concurrently during the transition period.
Nothing immediately. Continue using OpinionArchives as usual. Before your institution needs to make any changes, Coherent Digital will provide the information and resources required for the transition. These will include new URLs, MARC records, authentication information, discovery-service information, and training.
Yes. The period when both platforms are operating will give libraries an opportunity to explore OpinionArchives on the new platform and introduce the new environment to staff and users before the existing platform is retired.
During the transition period, libraries will have time to determine when to begin directing users primarily to the new platform.
We will contact customers throughout the transition and provide advance notice of important dates and required changes. Libraries will receive specific instructions before they need to update authentication, MARC records, discovery links, database listings, or other systems.
Once the transition period is complete, OpinionArchives content will be delivered through Coherent Digital. Customers will receive advance notice of the retirement date and a checklist of any remaining steps their institution should take.
Yes. The OpinionArchives magazines and content your institution currently licenses will migrate to the new platform.
The migration itself will not reduce the content available to customers. Existing magazine archives will be transferred to the new platform, subject to the rights associated with each publication.
Yes. All magazines and their archives, with the exception of two, will be available on October 22. Commentary and The New York Review of Books will not be complete on October 22 but will continue to migrate over the next three months. The intention is for the existing archive of each magazine to be available when that publication becomes available on the new platform.
Yes. New content will continue to be added during the transition so that customers maintain access to current issues as they are received from participating publishers.
Yes. New issues will be available on both platforms during the transition. We will provide customers with information about where newly received issues will appear while both platforms are operating.
We will continue to make new magazine content available as quickly as possible. If publication schedules or delivery times change as part of the migration, customers will be notified.
Where PDF versions are available, they can be accessed through the publication's table of contents. PDF availability varies by publication and depends on the rights and source files available.
Where OpinionArchives provides original page images or issue-level representations, these will be preserved wherever possible so researchers can continue to view material in its original publication context.
Where these materials form part of the magazine content supplied to OpinionArchives, they will be retained wherever rights and available source files permit.
Existing bibliographic metadata, including article title, author, publication, volume, issue, date, and pagination, will migrate with the content provided through the issue-level record and the Table of Contents we have created. The move to Coherent Digital also provides opportunities to improve metadata, including tags, issue-level summaries, and discoverability where appropriate.
Yes. Bibliographic information associated with the original publication will not change simply because the content is moving to a new platform.
No. Moving a magazine to the new platform does not itself change the historical coverage licensed by your institution. Coverage may expand over time as additional issues, backfiles, or newly licensed content become available.
Yes. An advantage of moving the collections to the Commons platform is the ability to improve metadata, correct errors, and enhance discoverability over time without changing the integrity of the original publication.
You are encouraged to check access upon moving over to the Coherent platform. Coherent Digital will provide customers with information about the coverage available for each magazine, including applicable date ranges and holdings.
Customers who identify a missing issue, article, PDF, or metadata problem can report it directly to Coherent Digital at ashay@coherentdigital.net. We will investigate discrepancies between the existing OpinionArchives archive and the content available on the new platform.
Yes. The move to the new platform gives us the opportunity to expand select magazines beyond their traditional article archives. Where available, we will add new media published by the magazines themselves, including blogs, podcasts, newsletters, Substacks, and videos. This content was not previously available through the OpinionArchives platform.
Magazines increasingly publish across multiple formats rather than through print and online articles alone. Important commentary, interviews, analysis, and reporting may now appear in a podcast, newsletter, blog, video, or Substack. Bringing these formats together gives researchers a more complete view of what a publication is producing and how magazine publishing is evolving.
New media (blogs, podcasts, videos, and newsletters) will be available for select magazines where the publication produces this content and where it can be included on Policy Commons. New media is available for the following publications:
The types and amount of new media will vary by publication.
Depending on the magazine, content may include blogs, podcasts, newsletters, Substacks, videos, and other born-digital publishing formats. Not every magazine produces every type of media, so coverage will vary from title to title.
Yes. Where new media is added to a magazine your institution licenses, it will be included as part of your access to that magazine at no additional charge.
Yes. For participating magazines, Policy Commons will continue to capture new media as it is published and made available for inclusion. The collections can continue to grow not only with new issues and articles, but also with the changing ways magazines communicate with their audiences.
No. The historical and current magazine content remains at the heart of each collection. New media extends the archive rather than replaces it, bringing together the traditional magazine and the newer digital channels through which the publication now reaches its readers.
Yes. Researchers will be able to search within an individual magazine from its landing page. They can also broaden a search across multiple magazines or other Policy Commons content, provided they have the licensed modules, when their research calls for a wider perspective.
Yes. Cross-searching is one of the major advantages of the move. Researchers will be able to discover relevant articles across the OpinionArchives collections without having to search each magazine separately.
Yes. Researchers will have the option to discover magazine content alongside other materials available through Policy Commons. This opens new connections between magazine journalism, commentary, and analysis and the reports, policy documents, government publications, and other research materials available on the platform.
Yes. OpinionArchives' full text will remain searchable on Policy Commons, with additional search functionality that makes it easier to locate terms and concepts within and across publications.
Yes. Each magazine's dedicated landing page allows researchers to browse the publication by decade. Each magazine issue contains a thumbnail of the cover page along with its respective date, volume, and issue.
Yes. The table of contents in each magazine issue record facilitates browsing by article. In less common cases, where an item is located on an external platform, users can browse through an issue on that platform.
Yes. Articles can be downloaded or printed through the publication's table of contents. In addition, complete issues can be downloaded or printed.
New media will be integrated into the magazine's dedicated Policy Commons landing page, allowing researchers to discover traditional magazine content and newer digital formats together. Users will be able to search for a specific blog or podcast, or they can use the Document Type on the left-hand facets to identify blogs, podcasts, and videos.
Yes. Users can search across articles, podcasts, blogs, newsletters, and videos in Policy Commons and also within a particular magazine title. A search could uncover a magazine article alongside a related podcast, blog post, newsletter, or video from the same publication. The search results can be narrowed by artifact format.
Yes. Where transcripts or searchable text are available, podcasts and videos can become discoverable alongside written magazine content. This gives researchers another way to find relevant discussions, interviews, commentary, and analysis that may never have appeared in a traditional magazine article.
Yes. The underlying bibliographic citation remains valid. Users are encouraged to utilize the citation feature on the Coherent Digital platform. If an existing citation includes an OpinionArchives URL, customers should consult our guidance on persistent links and redirects as the migration progresses.
Where content already carries a persistent identifier, we will preserve it wherever possible. Coherent has assigned every OpinionArchives item a COI and that will continue to be the case for any artifact ingested into the Commons platform.
Yes. These will be redirected on January 15, 2027. Until that time the original OpinionArchives links will continue to be valid. We recognize that links to OpinionArchives articles may already appear in syllabi, reading lists, LibGuides and other research guides, learning-management systems, faculty websites, and published research. We will provide clear guidance about redirects and any links that need to be updated.
Where existing OpinionArchives links redirect automatically, faculty may not need to make immediate changes. We will provide guidance for libraries and faculty about any links that should be updated.
We will let users know in advance whether existing personal account information can be transferred and whether any saved information should be exported or recreated before the existing platform is retired.
Coherent Digital will provide specific instructions for supported authentication methods, including any changes libraries need to make to IP authentication, proxy configurations, SSO, OpenAthens, or Shibboleth. Customer Support will provide these details.
We recognize that OpinionArchives links may already appear throughout library websites, catalogs, LibGuides, course materials, reading lists, and faculty resources. Redirects will automatically take place on January 15, 2027. Prior to that time, if the library has not moved to the Coherent platform, your OpinionArchives links will continue to function. We will provide clear instructions on how existing links will be handled and identify any URLs libraries should update before the existing platform is retired.
Coherent Digital will provide guidance on existing article links and bookmarks so libraries can plan for any updates that may be required.
Yes. Updated MARC records will be provided with links to the magazine collections on Policy Commons. Libraries will receive instructions and sufficient lead time to make these changes before the existing OpinionArchives platform is retired.
Yes, eventually. Libraries should plan to update locations that currently direct users to the OpinionArchives platform. We will provide the appropriate URLs and recommended descriptions well before the transition is complete.
OpinionArchives collections will be made available through Clarivate, EBSCO, and OCLC discovery services. We will provide customers with specific information as records and collections become available.
Discovery records have been provided to Clarivate, OCLC, and EBSCO for OpinionArchives magazines. A document will be made available on our website that provides the status of OpinionArchives (along with all other Coherent Digital products) in discovery platforms.
For usage of OpinionArchives magazines on Policy Commons, COUNTER usage statistics will be made available in the Customer Portal: customer.coherentdigital.net.
The Coherent Digital platform meets Level AA conformance with WCAG 2.1. Accessibility of licensed content is described alongside each set of content. Platform accessibility and the accessibility of original historical source materials may differ.

Yes. Customers will not need to reconstruct their purchasing history or tell Coherent Digital which OpinionArchives magazines they license.
Yes. Your institution's OpinionArchives holdings and entitlements will be reflected in the Coherent Digital customer portal on October 22, 2026.
