Mindscape Commons FAQ

 You can access Applied Science Commons, the new platform hosting Mindscape Commons content, in the following ways:

• Home site: appliedsciencecommons.net is the main landing page for the platform, where you can browse, log in, and access all modules you have permission to view.

• The Mindscape Commons Archive module: https://appliedsciencecommons.net/modules/mindscape-commons-archive/ contains all licensed Mindscape Commons content you previously purchased or had access to.

• The Applied Psychology module: https://appliedsciencecommons.net/modules/applied-psychology/ contains open-access videos, commercial content, and research projects. This content is freely available to explore.

You can search within a specific module, or cross-search two or more modules, making it easy to find relevant content no matter where it’s located.

What authentication methods are supported? Coherent Digital supports several frictionless ways for remote users to access Commons products, including IP range authentication, username and password, and other methods. Learn more here.

What do I do to enable access for my library? Your institutional access methods (IP, proxy, Shibboleth/OpenAthens, etc.) remain in place unless your institution uses EZproxy. If so, you’ll need to install the Coherent Digital Resources stanza on OCLC.

We also recommend:

• Updating links: Replace any legacy Mindscape Commons URLs with the new Applied Science Commons links in your library catalog, A–Z databases list, LibGuides, syllabi, and course management systems.

• Checking authentication settings: Confirm that your proxy, Shibboleth/OpenAthens, or IP settings are current (see Authentication: How to Enable Remote User Access).

• Promoting new features: Let your users know that by creating e personal accounts on Applied Science Commons, they can save searches, build collections, and bookmark items.

• Training: Contact us to schedule live sessions for faculty, students, or librarians to learn about navigating the platform, configuring Uptale (how VR content is hosted on the platform), and making the most of VR and 2-D content.

Yes, they will be redirected to the appropriate page on Applied Science Commons.  If your institution uses EZproxy, you’ll need to install the Coherent Digital Resources stanza on OCLC, if you haven't already done so.  We ask that you update any links in A-to-Z menus or LibGuides or other resources, to make access more direct for your users.

VR content continues to be hosted via Uptale, integrated into the Applied Science Commons platform, providing a sleek, modern, and user-friendly experience. Users can access VR experiences on both desktop and HMD devices via Uptale, with intuitive controls for interacting with immersive content.

2-D video content remains fully available and includes interactive transcripts, allowing end-users to quickly search for keywords within the video content and navigate to relevant sections easily. Interactivity with 2-D materials is forthcoming.

• Desktop, Laptop, or Tablet: You can experience all Mindscape Commons content on a modern browser on any of these devices. You can interact with VR content using your mouse, trackpad, or touch-screen gestures to rotate the scene or to click on hotspots.

• Mobile Web: Interact with VR content on your mobile device using a browser and touch gestures.

• Mobile Web with Cardboard: Interact with VR content using a Cardboard HMD and gaze-based hotspot activation.

• Oculus HMD: Interact with the VR content on your Oculus device. See instructions on how to set up.

Yes!

• Our Outreach and Engagement team offers custom online training for faculty, students, and librarians on navigating the platform, configuring Uptale, and making the most of VR and 2-D content. These sessions provide hands-on guidance for searching, exploring VR and multimedia resources, building collections, and integrating content into courses or research. You can schedule a session for your library team, faculty, or students.
